Strength, endurance, and skill on the wall.
Climbing blends relative strength, grip endurance, and movement skill. Whether on a short, powerful boulder problem or a long route, the question is the same: can you hold position and move efficiently while fatigue builds in your hands and forearms?
What matters most
- Relative strength: like calisthenics, performance scales with strength per kilogram, so pulling strength and body composition both matter.
- Grip and finger strength: the hands are usually the limiting factor; finger strength is trained carefully because the tendons and pulleys adapt slowly. See Soft Tissue.
- Forearm endurance: sustained gripping taxes local muscular endurance, so resisting the "pump" is its own trainable quality.
- Movement skill: footwork, body positioning, and route reading let you spare the arms and climb more efficiently.
Finger injuries are common when load outpaces tissue tolerance. Build finger and tendon strength gradually; see Prehab and Rehab.
